Verwood Rotary is a constant supporter of ShelterBox with funds raised from the Rustic Fayre and other events. We have just agreed additional funds for the hurricane in Jamaica.

ShelterBox is a high-impact international disaster relief charity that was originally founded in 2000 as a millennium project by the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard in Cornwall, UK. What began as a local initiative has evolved into a global partnership, with Rotary International naming ShelterBox as its first Project Partner in 2012. The project specialises in providing emergency shelter and essential household tools to families who have lost everything to natural disasters or conflict.

Key Aspects of the Partnership

The “Green Box”: Traditionally, the project is known for its iconic green crates, which contain a family-sized tent designed to withstand extreme weather, along with thermal blankets, water purification equipment, solar lights, and cooking utensils.

Global Network: ShelterBox leverages Rotary’s massive network of over 1.4 million members worldwide. Rotarians often act as “first responders” on the ground, providing local knowledge, logistical support, and vital links to affected communities.

Evolving Aid: While the boxes remain a staple, the project has expanded to provide “ShelterKits” containing heavy-duty tarpaulins and tools, allowing families to repair their damaged homes quickly.

The collaboration represents a powerful synergy between a specialized relief organisation and a global service network, ensuring that aid reaches the most remote and vulnerable corners of the globe during times of crisis.
