Verwood Rotary is proud to announce that we’ll be setting up our popular Pop-Up Bar and Beer Tent on Ferret Green as part of Verwood’s VJ Day Commemoration Event on the 15th of August. Join us for a community celebration that not only brings people together, but also honours an important moment in history — Victory over Japan Day, marking the end of World War II.

VJ Day, observed on August 15th, commemorates the moment in 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, effectively bringing WWII to a close. It’s a day to remember the immense sacrifices made during the conflict, especially in the Far East where many British and Commonwealth troops were still engaged in battle. For many families, the news of peace didn’t come until weeks after celebrations had begun in Europe. VJ Day reminds us of their stories — of hardship, courage, and eventual return.

While Verwood may be a quiet corner of Dorset today, it played its part during the wartime years. From evacuees arriving in the countryside to local men and women joining the services, Verwood’s community was deeply affected by the war. Today, VJ Day offers a chance for us to reflect on that legacy and to share stories with younger generations.

So come along to Ferret Green for a heartfelt day of remembrance and celebration — and don’t forget to stop by the Verwood Rotary Bar for a locally-sourced pint, a chat with neighbours, and a toast to peace. Your support helps us continue to fund and deliver community projects across Verwood and beyond.
