On June 24, 2026, north-central Venezuela was struck by a catastrophic doublet earthquake event, consisting of a magnitude 7.2 foreshock followed just 39 seconds later by a massive 7.5 mainshock. This sequence represents the strongest seismic activity the country has experienced in over a century. The tremors ruptured along the San Sebastián fault system, severely affecting the northern coastal and urban corridor, including Caracas and the state of La Guaira, where initial field reports indicated the collapse of up to 80% of buildings in heavily impacted zones. The disaster has claimed thousands of lives, left tens of thousands missing or injured, and displaced up to 6.8 million people into temporary shelters amid heavily compromised water and health infrastructures.
In response to this unfolding humanitarian crisis, Rotary International clubs around the world have mobilized rapidly, leveraging their structured global networks to funnel immediate financial and material aid directly to the ground. Operating as “people of action,” local Rotary districts are coordinating with assessment teams and regional authorities in Venezuela to establish safe supply corridors and ensure resources reach the hardest-hit municipalities.
A central pillar of Rotary’s response is its official international disaster relief partner, ShelterBox. Rotary clubs are pooling and donating emergency funds to deploy customised, heavily ruggedised shelter kits and essential survival equipment. These kits provide displaced families with robust tents, water purification supplies, solar lights, thermal blankets, and cooking utensils. By combining international fundraising with the boots-on-the-ground presence of Venezuelan Rotarians, the network is delivering critical, specialised relief to help communities stabilize during the high-risk aftermath of continuous aftershocks.
